Dear Friends and Colleagues,

from prestigious honours to audience awards and promising debuts, let us take you on a little tour d'Europe for our recent news:

We start with wonderful nominations in Germany: Elena Fischer (Paradise Garden) and Esther Schüttpelz (Without Me) are two out of eight authors shortlisted for the ›Harbour Front Debut Prize‹ - our fingers are crossed for both!

In Spain, Chris Kraus’ 20th century epic love triangle Cold Blood won this year’s award for ›Best Historical Novel in Translation‹ at the ›XIII Premios de Literatura Histórica Hislibris‹, while Bernhard Schlink’s The Granddaughter was voted best book in the foreign literature category by readers of ›Babelio‹, a social network for literature in France.

Petros Markaris received the ›Orden de Isabel la Católica‹, the most prestigious Spanish award for services to art and science, just as filming for the first episodes of the Italian Kostas series has wrapped up (coming in 2024), and the latest book in the series, The Revolt of the Caryatids entered the Italian bestseller list at #13.

And finally, in the UK, Swiss detectives are en vogue with The Murder of Anton Livius by Hansjörg Schneider just published and Deep Dark Blue by Seraina Kobler coming in November.

With this happy news we wish you a wonderful summertime!

Esther Schüttpelz nominated for the ›Harbour Front Debut Prize‹

Esther Schüttpelz nominated for the ›Harbour Front Debut Prize‹

Esther Schüttpelz' novel won the 2023 ›lit.Cologne Debut Prize‹ earlier this year and was well received by the press:

»An upbeat, sharp-tongued, sometimes funny, self-deprecating and definitely light-hearted debut novel.«
Karoline Pilcz / Buchkultur, Vienna

»Schüttpelz perfectly captures this in-between-ness, this state of limbo on the way to a new life. In Ohne mich she manages to cleverly and amusingly convey the doubts about life, relationships and decisions, the customs, feelings and thoughts of a generation.«
Madeleine Gullert / Aachener Zeitung, Aachen

»The protagonist of this wonderfully idiosyncratic debut faces endings and new beginnings, and Esther Schüttpelz knows how to capture the small and large doubts of the Now in a very zeitgeisty way.«
Sarah Kessler / Emotion, Hamburg

»What draws the reader into her trains of thought is her nonchalant and clever narrative tone.«
Sabine Schereck / tip, Berlin

Mameleben by Michel Bergmann reprinting in German

Mameleben by Michel Bergmann reprinting in German

Michel Bergmann's non-fiction debut about the life story of his mother and their complex relationship has become a quiet favourite in the German language market: on the Spiegel non-fiction bestseller list for 12 weeks, enjoying some great reviews, and enchanting book tour audiences - the third print run is already on the way.

»With an artistically daring balance of natural empathy and ironic distance, he contours a psychologically pungent biopic in rhapsodic style.«
Hans-Dietrich Grünefeld / Buchkultur, Vienna

»His sensitively written prose hits the heart because it points beyond itself: Bergmann honours not only his mother Charlotte in his novel, but also all the mothers who, despite all hardship, always stand up for themselves and their children.«
Berliner Morgenpost, Berlin

»Mameleben is a vivid piece of contemporary history and a wonderful, clever book full of warmth, wit and empathy - a very special kind of reading pleasure.«
Simone Neidlinger / Aachener Zeitung, Aachen

Elena Fischer nominated for the ›Harbour Front Debut Prize‹

Elena Fischer nominated for the ›Harbour Front Debut Prize‹

Elena Fischer's debut is publishing in September 2023 and the first impressions from our booksellers are enthusiastic:

»The narration goes straight to the heart, and it is told in a wonderful language from Billie’s almost childlike and yet wise perspective. Paradise Garden shoots right to the top of my list of favourite books!«

»Paradise Garden is everything I wish for in a ›touching‹ novel. The story takes you into a world that is not necessarily your own, but still allows you to find yourself there, shows you possibilities, makes you sad and happy, gives you hope and leaves the reader satisfied!«

»What a convincing debut! I liked Billie’s story very much, and as cautious and sceptical as I am when it comes to comparisons, it is safe to say this book is going to be great for readers of Benedict Wells.«

Cold Blood by Chris Kraus awarded the ›XIII Premios de Literatura Histórica Hislibris‹

Chris Kraus’ 20th century epic love triangle Cold Blood (La Fabrica de Canallas) won this year’s award for ›Best Historical Novel in Translation‹ at the ›XIII Premios de Literatura Histórica Hislibris‹ - congratulations to his Spanish publisher, Salamandra and the translator, Isabel García Adanez.

»It’s an impressive ride – the 900 pages, give or take, flow by with impetuous rhythm – a common thread through more than sixty years of the past century, from the rise of National Socialism into the Cold War.«
Letizia Tortello / La Stampa, Torino

»A furious opus magnum. Full of the joy of storytelling and strong images, drunk on emotion, as sensual as it is unscrupulous. An insanely good book.«
