Thus opens this novel in which not only individual destinies but a whole city and a whole epoch gain shape through the symbol of wreaths. Grouped around Anna's frugal life are the life histories of human beings of her immediate environment and all those to whom she does the last service with fir branches, laurels, carnations and roses.
