A True Story

Who is afraid of the bogeyman?
Children are much braver than adults often give them credit for; they are not so easily frightened by the bogeyman. And Jessica is no exception, although she has every reason to be afraid. At 13, with Native American blood in her veins, she is already a beauty – and a temptation for many men. But she cannot expect any real protection from her penniless hippy mother, who is far too preoccupied with her own life and lovers. For Jessica and her sisters, life is an adventure. Some of these adventures are similar to those of other children, others not at all: Instead of lemonade, they sometimes drink beer, as the smell of a joint wafts through the house. When, at night, someone leans over Jessica's
bed, it is seldom her mother. And when they play hide-and-seek, the bogeyman really does come.
Jessica draws on all her courage and imagination to ensure that her childhood does not become an endless nightmare. With black humour, she finally triumphs over the bogeyman.
